Thaba Metsi, meaning “Mountain Water” in Northern Sotho, takes its name from the river and mountain that frame our lodge, as well as from the greater Waterberg Mountains in which it rests. The name reflects not only our setting, but also the spirit of place – where water and wilderness shape the land, the wildlife, and the experience of those who visit.
Designed in the style of a traditional bush lodge, Thaba Metsi blends authenticity with comfort. Original sandstone columns and a thatch roof give the lodge its distinctive character, while warm interiors and open fireplaces create a welcoming atmosphere. Expansive patios overlook the river, offering tranquil spaces to unwind after a day on safari. Each suite is beautifully curated, combining natural textures with modern luxury to ensure guests enjoy both elegance and ease. From private river-facing patios to thoughtful amenities, Thaba Metsi is a sanctuary where style meets serenity.
Set within the Welgevonden Game Reserve, in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Waterberg Biosphere, Thaba Metsi offers more than a retreat, it offers a connection to an ancient landscape. Just under three hours from Johannesburg, this malaria-free wilderness spans 38,000 hectares and is home to Africa’s iconic Big Five: elephant, lion, rhino, leopard, and buffalo. Alongside these giants roam cheetah, hyena, an extraordinary variety of plains game, and a wilderness where birdlife flourishes in abundance, making the reserve a paradise for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
